SAT Math Prep: The Complete Guide to Scoring Higher

The SAT Math section is one of the most important parts of the exam for college admissions. Many students find it challenging, but with the right preparation strategy, you can significantly improve your score. The Math section tests your understanding of algebra, problem-solving, data analysis, and advanced math concepts. In this guide, we will break down the structure of the Math section, cover the most important topics, and provide actionable strategies to help you score higher.

Understanding the SAT Math Section

The SAT Math section is divided into two parts: the No Calculator section (20 questions, 25 minutes) and the Calculator section (38 questions, 55 minutes). The questions cover four main content areas: Heart of Algebra (linear equations and systems), Problem Solving and Data Analysis (ratios, percentages, and data interpretation), Passport to Advanced Math (quadratic and higher-order equations), and Additional Topics (geometry, trigonometry, and complex numbers).

The Math section accounts for 50% of your total SAT score, with a score range of 200 to 800. Understanding the distribution of questions across topics helps you allocate your study time effectively. Heart of Algebra and Problem Solving and Data Analysis make up the majority of questions, so these topics should be your primary focus.

Heart of Algebra

Heart of Algebra is the most heavily tested topic on the SAT Math section. It covers linear equations, linear functions, systems of linear equations, and linear inequalities. You should be able to solve for a variable, graph linear equations, interpret slope and y-intercept in context, and set up equations from word problems.

Key skills include: solving one-variable linear equations and inequalities; solving systems of two linear equations using substitution or elimination; interpreting the slope and y-intercept of a linear equation in context; and writing linear equations from word problems. Practice these skills until they become second nature, as they appear on nearly every SAT Math section.

Problem Solving and Data Analysis

This topic covers ratios, percentages, proportional relationships, and data analysis. You should be able to solve problems involving percentages (including percent increase and decrease), work with ratios and proportions, interpret data from tables and graphs, and understand measures of center and spread.

Key skills include: solving percent problems using the percent equation or proportion method; interpreting scatterplots and identifying trends; calculating mean, median, mode, and range; understanding standard deviation as a measure of spread; and interpreting data from two-way tables and histograms. These skills are practical and appear in real-world contexts on the exam.

Passport to Advanced Math

This topic covers quadratic equations, polynomial expressions, rational expressions, and functions. You should be able to solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, or using the quadratic formula. You should understand function notation and be able to manipulate polynomial and rational expressions.

Key skills include: factoring quadratic expressions; solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula; completing the square; adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials; simplifying rational expressions; and understanding function notation and composition. These topics build on Heart of Algebra and are essential for the more difficult questions on the exam.

Additional Topics

Additional Topics include geometry, trigonometry, and complex numbers. Geometry covers area, perimeter, volume, circles, and coordinate geometry. Trigonometry covers basic trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) and the unit circle. Complex numbers cover operations with imaginary numbers.

While these topics make up a smaller portion of the exam, they can be the difference between a good score and a great score. Focus on the most commonly tested concepts: circle equations, area and volume formulas, basic trigonometric ratios, and operations with complex numbers.

Test-Taking Strategies

Use process of elimination to narrow down answer choices. Even if you cannot solve the problem completely, eliminating obviously wrong answers increases your chances of guessing correctly. Plug in answer choices when the problem asks for a specific value. This is especially effective for equation and inequality problems.

Back-solve from the answer choices when the problem asks for a numerical value. Start with the middle answer choice and work up or down. Use estimation to check your answers. If you calculate a value that seems unreasonable, you probably made an error. Review your work, especially on the No Calculator section where arithmetic errors are common.

Practice Resources

The College Board provides eight free practice tests on their website. These are the best resource for SAT Math preparation because they use real SAT questions. Khan Academy offers free SAT practice that is personalized to your strengths and weaknesses. Our app provides additional practice with explanations for every question.

Create a study schedule and stick to it. Take at least one full practice test per week under timed conditions. Review every question you get wrong, not just the ones you guessed on. Identify patterns in your mistakes and focus your study on the topics where you need the most improvement. Consistent practice over several weeks is more effective than cramming.
